Welcome to the Muktabodha Newsletter

Dear Reader,

It is with great pleasure that we inaugurate this first issue of the new Muktabodha Indological Research Institute (MIRI) newsletter.

Our goal is for this newsletter to serve as a vehicle for all those interested in the work of MIRI to learn more about the Institute.

This first issue includes two perspectives on the philosophy of Kashmir Shaivism, the tradition that has remained a central focus of MIRI’s preservation work since its inception. In an interview with journalist Gayatri Ranganathan, Professor Gavin Flood, Professor of Hindu Studies and Comparative Religion at Oxford University provides a concise overview of Kashmiri Shaivite philosophy, including its development in relation to other Shaivite traditions in South Asia.

We are also pleased to present an article by Dr Nihar Purohit, Lecturer at Benares Hindu University and a member of MIRI’s Academic Advisory Council, in which he recounts the transforming impact of his study of Kashmir Shaivism on his academic and personal development. Using the Pratyabhijnahridyam, an 11th-century Shaivite text by the great Kashmiri pandit, Ksemaraja, he illustrates the depth and contemporary relevance of this ancient wisdom tradition.

Welcome to the MIRI newsletter! We warmly invite your feedback and encourage you to contact us at info@muktabodha.org.

With best wishes,
David M.Katz, PhD,  Chairman of the Board of Directors
